Why Sunglasses Are So Popular At The Poker Table
Whether it’s for a high stakes tournament at the Bellagio in Vegas or a friendly game with your friends in your garage, if you’re sitting down for a game of Texas Hold’em (and not a game of the online poker persuasion), you’re probably going to find yourself up against players who will be donning a pair of sunglasses when they play.
In fact, playing in poker tournaments is about the only time where it’s socially acceptable to wear sunglasses inside (heck, you can even wear your sunglasses at night).

Whether that’s true or not, one thing’s for sure, when a rival is looking for your elusive “tell,” they’re going to look at your eyes first as they’re most likely to be holding the secret to if you hit your flush draw on the river or if you’re trying to pull a fast one.
For anyone who has take the time to study NLP, you’ve probably been told to study eye movement when you ask questions. There are subtle little movements each person makes with their eyes and in the muscles around the eye to indicate a yes or a no. The particular movement each person makes with their eye is often unique to them – there is no universal signal contrary to what you may have seen on TV.
However, a skilled practitioner of the art of NLP can have that movement nailed down in less than 60 seconds with nothing more than seemingly harmless jibber jabber while the cards are being dealt.
And once your baseline answers have been established, all those poker skills you’ve been building are going to be greatly diminished and you’ll be back to relying on lady luck to beat that particular player.
What to wear?
When it comes to what to wear at the poker table, you can wear anything that you find comfortable though for best results, go for shades that completely cover your eye and have mirrored lenses.
Personally, I’m a big fan of Oliver Peoples sunglasses, but that’s just a personal preference in general. You’ll probably find most players wearing Oakley’s as they tend to cover the aforementioned criteria best.
Of course, there’s more to being successful at the poker table than just having a fancy pair of sunglasses.
